Welcome to the Economic Development module of the Sustainability Shaper.
The economy is of course crucial in creating wealth and providing goods, services and jobs for the communities it serves. But some current consumption and production practices and approaches to economic management are simply unsustainable - relying, for instance, on high carbon ways of getting people and goods around or (related to this) failing to provide support for essential local economies.
2006's Stern Review sharply highlighted the increased urgency and clear economic case for tackling climate change (click here for further info on the Stern review). And here in the South West (with our dispersed population and particular issues around access and transport) a shift to a low carbon, resource efficient economy is particularly important.
New and innovative approaches are needed to ensure the South West maximises the opportunities (and meets the responsibilities) of economic development fit for the 21st century. This is a UK challenge, as set out in the national sustainable development strategy 'Securing the Future' (2005) which notes that, “we need a major shift to deliver new products and services with lower environmental impacts across their lifecycle, and new business models which meet this challenge while boosting competitiveness."
The South West is in prime position to be a leader in a 'one planet economy' which also meets local employment needs for rewarding jobs. Our Regional Economic Strategy (RES) recognises that we must find sustainable ways to develop, giving us a focus for marrying economic dynamism with environmental stewardship with its new statement of intent: "South West England will demonstrate that economic growth can be secured within environmental limits." (click here for a ‘sustainability take’ on the Regional Economic Strategy).
Everyone involved in economic development has a role to play. You can start by browsing 'Planning Sustainable Economic Development', 'Must-Have Ingredients for Delivery' and the more detailed 'Checklist for Economic Development' (right).
Please help us to develop this module by letting us know about useful resources (including case studies) when you feedback. You can also share your experience, ideas and questions on economic development and other topics with fellow Sustainability Shaper users in the ExChange.
Shaper modules (specialist guidance for particular ‘activities’ in the South West) are being developed in response to demand and support from a number of regional agencies. If your organisation (or its partners) is interested in commissioning/sponsoring a particular module please let us know when you feedback.
