Checklist for Health

This checklist has been developed for anyone working for or with an NHS organisation in the South West. 

Community groups/leads may also find it useful to browse the Checklist for Sustainable Communities and Regeneration.

Do YOU shape up? Are you...

...developing sustainability learning and skills?
...do you promote continued sustainability learning for your staff, as well as offering learning opportunities for local communities?
...do you share knowledge and experience with others in the sector and beyond to develop policy and inform good practice?

...improving physical and mental well-being?

...are you developing active travel plans for staff, patients and visitors that promote cycling and walking to and within your site(s)?
...are you developing suitable greenspaces on your site(s) for use by staff, patients and visitors?
...do you support the health and well being of local communities through outreach programmes, visitor communications and links with relevant partners (including LSPs)?
...do you provide healthy, appetising, local and organic (where possible) food for patients, staff and visitors?
...do you actively promote the quality of life benefits of the local environment to your staff, visitors, volunteers and local community?

...are you using local materials and labour for projects, including new builds and refurbishments?
...do you promote the sustainability of using and maintaining existing buildings where appropriate?

...are you using local sourcing and labour and linking into the local community for goods and services?
...are you considering options for renewable energy technology?

...reducing high carbon travel?
...do you promote car sharing and provide adequate, safe cycle parking for staff and visitors (with changing rooms where appropriate)?
...does your site have good signage to and from bus stops and walking/cycle routes?
...do you provide public transport information and timetables (via website and information line)?
...do you have a ‘green’ travel plan which encourages the reduction in car use for staff and visitors?
...if you provide pool cars, are they efficient, hybrid/LPG and well maintained?

...using local and ethical goods & services?
...do you source food and other products from local suppliers, organic and seasonal wherever possible?
...have you produced a sustainable procurement strategy for projects and operations?
...are you checking the sustainability credentials of your suppliers and letting them know what you expect?

...enhancing local distinctiveness and diversity including biodiversity?
...are you protecting and enhancing the local environment?
...are new or renovated buildings designed to reflect local character, using local materials?
...are you landscaping and planting with appropriate native species to encourage biodiversity?

...helping everyone to join in public decision-making?
...do you engage communities in decision making, for example through representation on LSPs?
...do you link to local sustainable community strategies?
...do you have a ‘green team’/’climate change group’ that involves staff at all levels?

...taking a longer term approach?
...have you fully taken into account how your Trust can contribute to supporting sustainable communities?
...are you contributing to pilot projects that promote adaption to the inevitable climate change impacts on your Trust’s estate?
...are you financially sustainable, particularly in light on increasing fuel and energy prices?
...have you taken full account of the NHS Carbon Reduction Strategy ‘Saving Carbon, Improving Health’ and integrated it into all levels of your organisation?
